Duct Cleaning, is it a scam or absolutely worth it? If done properly, duct cleaning is something that needs to be on your regular home maintenance list.
Mold: Any sight of visible mold growth inside the ductwork, the ducts and HVAC system should be cleaned thoroughly.
Renovation: If your home has been remodeled chances are you may have significant dust in your ductwork which will need to be cleaned. Ducts should be sealed off during any home renovations; but if they aren’t, dangerous dust and debris may become lodged inside the ductwork.
Contaminants: The biggest culprit is debris, pet hair, odors, or other contaminants that are being released into the air through the ducts. Even after the registers have been wiped down and cleaned you will still have to have the ducts cleaned.
Illness: Allergy suffering from pollen, dust or indoor air quality is a reason for considering having your ducts cleaned after you’ve taken every other possible step to decontaminate your home.
Animals: If you find any evidence of an animal infestation or nesting in your ducts or HVAC system, have the animals removed then clean the ductwork and HVAC unit.
Avoid Scams: Ads for “$99 whole-house specials” are scams. In the industry, these are known as a “Blow and go”. An unlicensed individual will come into your home and wipe down and use a small vacuum and at worst, you’ll end up talked into a much more expensive package. High-quality duct and HVAC cleaning is done by a licensed and insured certified AC contractor and should cost upwards of $500 and take several hours. Do your homework!
